Question: I am certain that I want to change to a different child care provider. When should I let my childcare provider know?
My response: It depends. In order to answer that question, I need to understand a bit of context about your situation.
- Do you have safety concerns about your child’s current arrangement?
- Have you locked in the new arrangement?
- What kind of transition time does your child need based on his or her temperament?
- What are your provider’s policies about withdrawal? Can you make your decision in a way that is in compliance with the contract you signed?
- Do you and your provider have a strong relationship with good communication?
- Will you want to go back (either for this child or another) to your provider if things don’t work out with the new provider?
- Are you willing to fulfill your payment obligations based on your contract with the provider?
- If you are not willing to fulfill your payment obligations according to your contract, are you prepared to face a civil suit for breaching your contract?
- Is your provider a close family member or friend?
Since I’m here and you there, asked yourself these questions. Then think about your answers and how they impact when you may choose to talk to your provider. There are both risks and benefits associated with your “When”. Being knowledgeable and open about expectations will give you and your child the advantage of a graceful exit.
I wish you the best!
