Milestone Minute – Language Development

Welcome to Milestone Minute!

  • What words should a 12-month-old say?
  • How many words should a 12-month-old be able to say?
  • Is it normal for a 12-month-old not to talk?

Our first child “picked up” words and language expressions very early. He readily showed his understanding of words, exclamations, and commands. Our second child didn’t speak until much later. He barely made any sounds. Fortunately, my pediatrician was supportive and did not allow me to assume the worst. When my son finally did speak, he spoke an entire sentence! He had been fully aware of all the language around him. It turned out, that he is an economical speaker. You will never catch him saying what he does not mean or wasting words. Our third child just screamed all the time. She turned out to be the most verbally expressive.

I’d like to share with you a blog post from Toddler Talk. Click here: https://toddlertalk.com/blog/first-words to learn more about How to Encourage Your Child’s First Words.

Childcare Action Items:

Ask your childcare provider these questions to better understand your child’s language interaction with them:

  • *What activities do you include in your daily programming to encourage language development?
  • *What language attempts do you observe in my child each day?”
  • *Is there anything my child does or does not do that concerns you?

If I can help you with additional ideas and strategies to encourage language development at home, please leave me a comment below or click: https://www.victoriashouseacademy.com/services/one-on-one-parent-coaching/ for a complimentary consult.
